GVF, a non-profit organization with over 34 years of experience inspiring mobility choices for all, kicked off the My School in Motion Program with an event at Eisenhower Science and Technology Leadership Academy (ESTLA).
The My School in Motion Program is a two-year program funded by a Transportation Alternatives Set Aside Grant. The program introduces students to the benefits of walking and biking, the basics of pedestrian and bicycle traffic safety, multi-modal transportation planning/engineering, and civic involvement.
The kick-off event was held on a beautiful October day and was a huge success! Over 120 students walked and biked from ESTLA to the nearby Elmwood Park, where they participated in activities learning about safe walking and biking behaviors. The event was supported by the fantastic staff members from ESTLA, who, led by Elizabeth Trostle, helped to ensure that students walked safely from the school and engaged with the activities.
Students learned the basics of crosswalk safety, identified safe and unsafe behaviors while walking and biking throughout the community, learned bicycle hand signals, discussed their biking and walking habits, and more.
PA State Senator Amanda Cappelletti, NASD Superintendent Dr. Christopher Dormer, and the Norristown Police came to support the event and the partnership between NASD and GVF.
GVF looks forward to continuing to partner with ESTLA and other schools in the district to create an engaging program for students that encourages the health, safety, and transportation benefits of biking and walking.
